12 Annually* The Contra Costa Health (CCH) Building Healthy Communities Program (BHC) is seeking a _Health Education Specialist – Project (HES) _to join a dynamic team of public health professionals dedicated to advancing health equity.
With a focus on disinvested communities and vulnerable road users, the BHC Program works to prevent traffic fatalities and serious injuries, increase opportunities for safe and equitable active transportation, and mitigate the health impacts of the climate crisis through policy, systems and environmental change.
To ensure communities are designed and built for health, BHC promotes planning and land use decisions that incorporate community priorities, health equity and safe mobility for all.
Additionally, BHC provides Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programming and active transportation promotion in neighborhoods, schools and communities across the county.
Under the supervision of the BHC Program Manager, this temporary position will collaborate with program staff and multisector partners to implement the duties listed below.
The HES will provide programmatic and administrative support related to SRTS programming, bicycle and pedestrian safety programs, and other projects focused on improving community health and built environments, as assigned.
The HES will spend a significant amount of time (at least one day per week) providing direct SRTS programming within public schools across the county, with an emphasis on West Contra Costa.
The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following: *Programmatic Duties (60%)* · Support Program Manager and Senior Health Education Specialists in planning, conducting and evaluating projects related to health and the built environment · Support planning and delivery of SRTS programming in TK-12 public schools countywide, with an emphasis on West Contra Costa County.
Programming may include trainings for school staff, school assemblies, classroom seminars, bike rodeos, walk audits and related programmatic approaches, under supervision and as assigned · Develop, order materials, assemble, and deliver Walk & Roll to School Day kits for dozens of schools · Assist in the development and delivery of virtual and in-person trainings, workshops and technical assistance for diverse audiences, on topics related to health equity, bicycle/pedestrian safety, the built environment, and other community health topics · Review and monitor local, state and national developments related to health and road safety, active transportation, the built environment, as well as promising policy, systems and environmental change strategies · Prepare visual aids and materials related to health, the built environment and SRTS · Maintain and distribute active transportation promotion materials to staff and the general public as appropriate · Evaluate and prepare written reports on program activities · Track and respond to requests for technical assistance from internal and external partners · Maintain internal databases related to tracking program activities · Support the development of program communications materials, including social marketing campaigns, social media posts, newsletters and website content · Represent the program, provide active transportation encouragement, and deliver community safety information and helmet fittings at community events and meetings · Develop and maintain strong relationships with diverse community residents and multisector partners, including youth, caregivers, school staff, school administrators, land use planners, transportation engineers, and other collaborative partners · Other programmatic duties as assigned *Administrative Duties (40%):* · Support the development of grant proposals in collaboration with the Program Manager · Draft and edit reports · Monitor and track program activities · Consult with Program Manager to ensure all project activities are allowable under guidelines set by funders, as well as federal, state and county requirements · Maintain organized files and program documentation · Draft agendas and keep minutes for internal and external meetings · Order, maintain inventory and distribute program materials, in coordination with program and administrative staff · Collaborate with administrative staff on requisitions and purchasing · Schedule and maintain current calendar of presentations, events and activities · Maintain documentation of time spent on program activities and grant deliverables · Other administrative duties as assigned *Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:* · Knowledge of the principles, theories, techniques and practices of public health, advancing health equity, and addressing the social and structural determinants of health · Knowledge of policy, systems and environmental change approaches · Knowledge of county health systems and county government · Experience and skill in using Microsoft Office Suite (including Teams, OneDrive, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) · Excellent organizational skills and ability to keep detailed records · Excellent writing skills and ability to write clear and concise reports · Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, both independently and collaboratively with a team · Ability to travel regionally within the County - as often daily or weekly to West Contra Costa County and monthly to Central and East Contra Costa County · Ability and willingness to operate a cargo van and a pickup truck with a hitched trailer · Ability to lift 20-40 pounds, such as when setting up and breaking down bike rodeo equipment and moving program materials to and from storage · League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) certification OR willing to become certified within first year of employment (certification supported by the Program) *Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:* · Experience working with youth and young adults · Experience developing and delivering health education curriculum · Fully bilingual in English and Spanish · Experience and skill in using Canva and Airtable · Content knowledge of Safe System Approach, Vision Zero, Safe Routes to School, transportation and land use planning processes, active transportation promotion, and bicycle and pedestrian safety *Additional Requirements: *Must be willing to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
Must have regular access to a reliable, fully insured automobile.
Must report at least three days per week to an office located in Concord, CA.
May work remotely up to two days per week, following the 9-month probation period.
*Minimum Qualifications:* *License Required: *Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
Out-of-state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.
*Education: *Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Health Services Administration, Social Work, Health Education, Education, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, Nutrition, or a closely related field.
*Experience: *One year of full-time, or its equivalent, which included direct responsibility for performing health promotion, health prevention, or community health education work.
*Substitution for Education: *Four years of full-time, or its equivalent, experience equivalent to the Community Health Worker II in Contra Costa County and 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of college coursework with at least 12 semester and 18 quarter units in health-related coursework may be substituted for the required Bachelor's degree.
*Salary: *Starting salary is commensurate with experience.
The monthly salary range starts at $4,935.
