JOB The position is non-benefited and part-time (average up to 10-15 hours per week).
Hours may be slightly flexible, but ideally employee will work daily from 11:00 a.
m.
to 2:00 p.
m.
Under direct or general supervision, the Nutrition Program Assistant holds responsibility for the intake of catered foods, follows safe food handling protocols, distributes food based on serving guidelines as provided, provides direction to kitchen volunteers, and operates simple food service support equipment in a safe and effective manner including food preparation, washing and sanitizing of equipment, storage and refrigeration of food, and any other equipment as part of the daily routine.
Daily reporting including reconciliation of donated funds and completion of required program paperwork.
The Nutrition Program Assistant receives direct or general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel.
Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
May exercise technical and functional direction and provide training to other staff and volunteers.
This is an entry-level class in the Parks and Community Services Department.
Positions in this class typically have basic work-related experience and work under general supervision.
Typical DutiesProvides direction to kitchen volunteers in the Senior Nutrition program.
Provides feedback regarding program goals and recommends new and innovative program ideas.
Assists the public with questions and problems.
Opens, closes, secures and maintains a safe program environment and facility; conducts safety checks.
Attends mandatory pre-service and in-service training and meetings.
Administers first aid as required; handles emergency or extraordinary situations by notifying the proper authority or responder.
Reports incidents/accidents.
Demonstrates knowledge of food safety practice.
Keeps records of food temperatures, volunteer hours and meal count reports.
Submits supply orders and reports to Contra Costa County Senior Nutrition Program office.
Maintains a safe, positive environment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Knowledge of: Techniques of leading and overseeing daily program participants and activities.
Practices of supervising and training program volunteers.
Safety principles and practices, including basic first aid and adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) methods.
Basic safety precautions and procedures related to the Senior Nutrition program and facilities.
Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, basic record-keeping, arithmetic, and computer applications related to the work.
English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
Techniques for effectively dealing with individuals of various ages, various socio-economic and ethnic groups, and effectively representing the City in contacts with the public.
Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
Principles and methods of food preparation.
Kitchen equipment and food production procedures.
Kitchen sanitation and methods of care and cleaning of kitchen equipment.
Basic safety procedures as applied to food storage and preparation.
Ability to: Work independently while supervising facilities and volunteers and participants.
Understand and apply facility use policies and procedures.
Provide courteous assistance to facility patrons.
Remain flexible and adapt as job responsibilities change.
Handle medical emergencies and injuries in a calm and effective manner, including providing basic first aid and adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs.
Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
Perform routine equipment maintenance.
Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Understand written and verbal food preparation and safety instructions.
Operate large and small kitchen equipment and tools.
Serve food according to departmental policies and procedures.
Store and handle food items and supplies safely according to established procedures.
Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
Maintain personal appearance and hygiene.
Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety standards and follow established procedures to meet high standards of cleanliness, health, and safety.
Keep garbage collection containers and areas neat and sanitary.
Handle and record cashier functions accurately.
Help record food requisitions and order necessary supplies.
Maintain daily food intake records.
