Job Titles: Respite Caregiver/Community Integration Aide for 8-year-old child Job Class: Part-time/Seasonal Pay: $26/hr.
Hours for Respite Caregiver: 10-15 hours/week, flexible, year-round Hours for Community Integration Aide: 32.
5 hours per week for 7 weeks during camp, temporary, summer only, 9:00-3:30, June 10-August 2.
Locations: East Oakland near San Leandro border (home) and North Berkeley (summer camp).
Possible additional locations TBD.
The family of an 8-year-old Regional Center client with special needs is seeking a part time long-term respite caregiver and also a part-time seasonal/temporary community integration aide to accompany the client to summer day camp in the SF East Bay Area.
Both positions can be filled by the same person or by different people.
If you are currently working as a classroom aide or if you are a student in a related field, you probably have the skills we are looking for, and we can probably work around your existing schedule.
The client is a bright, articulate, very active child with complex sensory needs and high reactivity to the emotional state of caregivers and peers.
Keeping a cool head and maintaining a warm regard for the client is a must.
The ideal candidate will have the following skills/experience: 1.
Direct experience working with neurodivergent children (paraprofessional, respite caregiver, inclusion specialist, aide, nanny, babysitter to children with similar needs, etc.
) 2.
Ability to stay calm and help client stay calm when things don't go as expected (primarily this will be sensory and social challenges).
3.
A willingness to problem-solve and negotiate respectfully with the client while setting reasonable limits to ensure safety.
4.
Physically able to remove client from dangerous situations without causing injury or undue stress.
5.
Incredible de-escalation skills, such that (4) is a rarity (see also, 2) 6.
Successful experience advocating for the inclusion needs of and securing accommodations for disabled clients in "general" group settings, such as classes, sports, camps, etc.
(can be professional or informal/personal) 7.
You adhere to the maxim, "Kids do well when they can," and strive to make it so they "can", rather than trying to make it so they "will" without addressing structural barriers.
8.
Must be able to travel to client's home in East Oakland, or to day camp in Berkeley (and possibly to other activity sites around the East Bay), including locations that are not BART-accessible.
9.
Must have recent CPR cert or be willing to get one before starting work 10.
Must provide references and pass a LiveScan background check before starting work.
These would also be a bonus: 1.
Experience tutoring or teaching a skill to children (music, language, a craft, cooking etc.
), or any knowledge or skills you'd be willing to share informally.
2.
Wilderness skills (foraging, fishing, "bushcraft", etc.
) 3.
Your own car and a driving license with a safe driving record.
4.
Some interests shared with client, such as gaming, fishing, outdoor activities.
