About the Position This position is a team member of the College of Science’s (CSCI) Student Service Center.
The CSCI Student Service Center Advisor provides comprehensive graduation-related service, advice, and developmental guidance for all current and returning upper division students with majors and minors in CSCI.
This position provides students with accurate, timely advising and evaluation of coursework as applicable to the completion of their major, general education, and university graduation requirements.
The advisor also assists students from all CSCI majors served by the Student Service Center in pursuing their educational and career goals through various steps such as career assessments and graduate school research.
This position will also work closely with the coordinator of the CSCI student service center in training and onboarding new advisors.
Advising at the Concord campus or representation at events held at other institutions may, at times, be required.
Responsibilities Provide comprehensive graduation-related services, advice and developmental guidance for upper division undergraduates with majors and minors in the College of Science.
The level of support differs depending on the program.
Provide individually tailored advice for students whose tenure at the University straddles semester conversion.
The tasks associated with the above functions include the following, which must be reviewed and signed off where appropriate by departmental faculty advisors: creating and maintaining student files including documenting all appointments and student interactions with appropriate notes; evaluating incoming transfer coursework to determine credit, equivalencies, and potential substitutions; providing developmental advice about occupational and educational requirements towards career goals to help students select the most appropriate majors, minors, and concentrations and make expedient progression toward completion of the required coursework; reviewing all completed coursework, including general education and university graduation requirements; and performing final major checks to verify that based on catalog year and concentration chosen, all major-related degree requirements have been met prior to graduation.
Plan and run group orientation sessions for new transfer students.
Facilitate group advising sessions and co-lead workshops.
Outreach to targeted groups of students as part of graduation initiatives, campaigns, or because of high-risk markers to assist them in getting back on track toward their educational goals.
Assist students in undergraduate registration services for CSCI.
These include, but are not limited to: add/drop, waitlist verification, special registration petitions for independent and individual study, withdrawal, retroactive withdrawal and late registration petitions.
Minimum Qualifications Experience: Two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
Experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
A Master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field.
Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
Obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
Reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
Recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.
Required Qualifications Knowledge, Special Skills, and Abilities: Cultural sensitivity when interacting with a very diverse population of students and faculty.
Demonstrated ability to use computer applications such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and imaging software.
Familiarity with or demonstrated ability to master programs such as PeopleSoft, Singularity, Google Calendar, and the departmental share drive.
Ability to initiate, implement, and troubleshoot existing and new departmental policies and programs.
Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, via technology or in person.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Specific Physical and/or Environmental Working Conditions: Periods of high demand and frequent interruptions.
Frequent computer use is required.
Advising at the Concord campus or representation at events held at other institutions may at times be required.
Condition(s) of Employment Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment.
