UMCS is a public charter school serving TK through 8th grade.
The school is located in Oakland and is open to all children residing in the state of California.
We serve a socio-economically, racially and culturally diverse community of children because we believe that all children learn about different backgrounds and perspectives by living and working with people from those backgrounds and perspectives.
Responsibilities
-Partners effectively with the lead teacher to ensure children are growing and achieving at high levels through lesson planning, work tracking, progress monitoring and observation of students
-Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, generates a powerful classroom culture where children have high expectations for themselves and for others, are self-motivated and self-directed, have pride in and care for themselves and their community, and value as well as love learning
-Develops and implements small and whole group lesson plans and classroom activities consistent with UMCS instructional guidelines as directed by the Lead Teacher
-Assists in establishing and maintaining a harmonious and safe classroom environment
-Uses behavior management strategies with students that teach long - term life skills
-Participates in assessing students regularly in accordance with UMCS guidelines, examines student assessment data, and implements lesson plans to differentiate instruction for each student
-Builds strong relationships with young people and their families
-Participates in weekly all school and department faculty and staff meetings
-Collaborates with UMCS team members to improve own and others' instructional practices; shares best practices
-Works as a team member in cluster, department, and whole-school settings to create a strong professional learning community
-Meets weekly with the Lead Teacher to set goals and plan
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
-3+ years successful experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
-High school diploma
-Degree in or credits towards a college degree in the educational field

-Strong alignment with UMCS mission
-Ability to build immediate and caring rapport with children of all ages; strong understanding of child and adolescent development
-Passion for teaching and working with students from urban communities, with specific knowledge and understanding of the needs of students from different experiences, languages and backgrounds
-Ability to work in a creative and demanding learning environment, including the ability to problem-solve and manage ambiguity and adversity
-Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively
-Computer literate and able to acquire new technology skills
-Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of commitment; ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
-Must be professional, prompt, and punctual
-Must possess a growth mindset and be able to use feedback to refine practice
