Pay Range $153,210 - $196,788 Annually for the SES.
3 level $183,840 - $236,112 Annually for the SES.
4 level Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only.

Job Description We have an opening for an Analytical Chemist to become an integral member of the Forensic Science Center, conducting analyses and research for various externally funded research programs focusing on the science and technology surrounding chemical warfare agents, toxins, and explosives.
You will develop and exploit state-of-the-art capabilities to support real-world sample analysis and chemical attribution for national defense and global treaty compliance.
The position is in the Forensic Sciences and Assessment Group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
This position will be filled at either the SES.
3 or SES.
4 level, based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team.
Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will Operate and maintain analytical equipment including HPLC/UHPLC, LC-MS techniques, and LC coupled to other detection platforms.
Design and conduct research, conduct analyses, coordinate activities, and present/publish scientific results, while demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of fundamental analytical chemistry concepts.
Analyze and resolve analytical chemistry problems and establish solutions leading to information supporting programmatic needs.
This will include LC, LC-MS, and related, state-of-the-art techniques and may also include other analytical/separation procedures (e.
g.
, GC-MS) and spectroscopy (IR, UV, and/or NMR).
Assist with all aspects of operating the Forensic Science Center, including equipment maintenance, installation of new equipment, and waste management; perform other duties as assigned.
Document processes and procedures and maintain detailed an accurate laboratory notebooks.
Collaborate with laboratory scientists and management to improve capabilities in the Forensic Science Center, including specifying and procuring new equipment as funding permits.
Perform other duties as assigned.

4 level Lead team(s) of technical staff and exert influence on technical objectives of projects related to CWA and general analytical chemistry and forensics, routinely interacting with mid-level management and internal and external sponsors.
Pursue research opportunities in line with FSC’s R&D and applied science missions by engaging in ideation processes, concept refinement, proposal writing, and sponsor engagement.
Pursue scientific collaborations on behalf of the FSC both with internal LLNL groups and external research institutions.
Qualifications Ability to secure and maintain a U.
S.
DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.
S.
Citizenship.
PhD in chemistry, biology, forensic science or related field; or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Significant experience with applied mass spectrometry, particularly the development and use of LC-MS methods, including high-resolution mass spectrometry (e.
g.
, orbitrap or TOF) and MS/MS techniques.
Familiarity with other spectrometric techniques (e.
g.
, GC-MS) and other relevant analytical methodology (NMR, IR, UV) is also important, particularly with respect to characterization/quantitatation of trace organic analytes in complex matrices and to the identification of unknown compounds.
Ability to self-manage time and to adapt/refocus to changing priorities, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines, and ability to work independently and as a productive member of a team.
Advanced verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative R&D environments across LLNL.
Ability to work independently on complex technical tasks, provide in-depth analyses, and develop and execute unique technical solutions.

4 level Ability to develop independent research projects, reflected in prior experience working as a principal investigator for NSF, NASA, DOE, and/or DOD.
Significant experience leading technical and research teams in chemistry, biology, forensic science or a related field.
Proven publication record in chemistry, biology, forensic science or a related field.
Qualifications We Desire Experience using different chromatographic separations, optimizing LC-MS methods, and applying the technology to different classes of molecular compounds including proteins, peptides, and low-molecular weight chemicals.
Experience using modern GC and GC-MS instrumentation.
Experience handling of forensic evidence, the maintenance of chain of custody, and formal forensic documentation; particularly in the field of CBRNE-related science, technology, and forensics.
Experience managing financial, reporting, sponsor engagement, and technical duties associated with a research and development portfolio.
