Pipe and Foundry is seeking an Engineering Manager in Union City, CA.
The successful candidate will play a key role in developing engineering designs, plans and specifications on assigned projects and within established budgets, to meet the Company’s building, equipment, and facility requirements at three separate manufacturing facilities.
Essential Functions: Working within Company and Department policies and procedures, accepted engineering practices, government safety and pollution regulations and project time and budget estimate, develops engineering designs, plans and specifications to meet the Company’s building, equipment, and facility requirements.
Assigned projects extend from basic modifications to existing facilities and equipment to major construction of new structures and installation of equipment.
Conducts engineering studies to determine the necessary changes required to improve efficiency in buildings, equipment, and manufacturing processes.
Makes design calculations and prepares layouts for proposed projects to determine best engineering approach to problem.
Assists Plant Engineering and Maintenance personnel with the identification of causes of electrical and mechanical problems and the solution of the problems through adjustments, modifications, or the installation of new equipment.
Selects contractors and vendors for major projects, coordinates equipment and material orders.
Monitors delivery schedules to coordinate equipment installation and is available as needed for equipment delivery inspection and installation.
Schedules and manages the completion of major projects through on-site supervisor of external contracts and internal maintenance forces.
Resolves problems as they are encountered.
Prepares cost estimates, obtains vendor/contractor quotations, writes purchase order requisitions for equipment, parts, and material, and provides on-site supervision of construction projects to assure that plans and specifications are met.
Prepares drawings, installation schedules, operating and maintenance procedures, including parts lists, to provide plant personnel with operating and maintenance information.
Maintains working relationship with outside consulting engineers, contractors, suppliers, and vendors to provide the Company with quality materials and professional assistance.
Interacts internally with Department Managers, Plant Facilities Engineers, Purchasing Agents and other department personnel, and externally with Consulting Engineers, Contractors, other entity engineering departments and equipment and material suppliers.
Must be organized and tactful in all interactions.
Solicits written bids from outside consultants, contractors, and suppliers upon formal approval of projects; selects contractors and suppliers and negotiates variances in material, timetables and manpower to maintain overall schedule.
Obtain information from Engineering Department library and drawings, duplicate drawings as required and supplies information to plant personnel as required.
Interacts with Plant Maintenance Managers developing proactive preventative maintenance programs designed to improve predictability and reliability.
Interacts with Plant Leadership to identify long term capital project needs within manufacturing facilities.
Assigns work to Engineering Department employees and establishes time schedules that assure timely completion.
Coordinates departmental activities with Engineers and informs appropriate employees of relevant work activities of fellow employees.
Provides instruction and training to all employees on the specific responsibilities of their job.
Assesses their training needs and establishes on-the-job training activities on the procedures and techniques to allow the employee to become proficient as quickly as possible.
Participates in the hiring and orientation of all new departmental employees.
Establishes job qualifications and interviews all qualified applicants referred by Human Resources Department and selects the appropriate individual based on the applicant’s abilities to satisfy the Job Qualification Profile.
Assures that all department employees have a copy of their Job Description, especially the critical performance areas.
Reviews the performance of all salaried employees consistent with the timing outlined in the company’s salaried administration plan.
Establishes objectives with the employee at the start of each performance period and completes a performance appraisal form at the end.
Reviews the results of the performance appraisal with all employees and establishes training and development plans to help them overcome performance deficiencies and develop new job skills to help realize their potential.
Counsels and disciplines all employees with performance and/or disciplinary problems.
Conducts all discipline in accordance with the company’s policy and provides the proper attitude and supervisory help to assist the employee in correcting the deficiencies.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required with Mechanical Engineering preferred.
Registered professional engineer status preferred.
Ten or more years of broad-based engineering experience in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment, preferably a foundry company.
Knowledge of foundry equipment and procedures, OSHA regulations, environmental regulations, and service resources to the foundry industry.
Ability to think logically, strong decision-making skills.
Computer literate, able to effectively utilize CAD software.
Willing to travel up to 30% of the time coordinating engineering assignments.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills, ability to present technical data.
